Bengali fraudster whose helpers attacked police after his arrest arrested again; escape tunnel found in his house

Saddam Sardar, a fake gold dealer who was on the run since his arrest and subsequent escape under the guise of a mob attack on police in South 24 Parganas district of West Benal on Monday, has been caught again.

Police arrested Sardar on Wednesday in Kultali, where he was allegedly sheltered by local CPM leader Mannan Khan. Khan was also arrested.

Palash Chandra Dhali, police commissioner of Baruipur, said: “We have seven cases of fraud against Saddam and his aides. There is a group of seven to eight people involved in such activities. Mannan Khan was also involved in these activities. He sought refuge in a Subscribe to (Fisheries Monitoring House) of Mannan Khan for two days. Based on a tip-off, we conducted a search and arrested him along with Mannan.”

Dhali also said police were looking for Saddam’s younger brother Sairul.

On Monday, police arrested Sardar for cheating a man from Nadia district of Rs 1.2 million using a fake golden idol. However, a mob attacked the police team and took Sardar away. The mob reportedly fired several shots to scare off the police. At least three policemen were slightly injured in the mob attack.

Police arrested two women in connection with the mob attack: Saddam’s wife Masuda and Sairul’s wife Rabia.

Later that evening, while searching Sardar’s house, police discovered an escape tunnel believed to have been used by Saddam.
