Houston Dynamo FC scores late goal to earn three points away at San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. (July 17, 2024) – Houston Dynamo FC beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 away tonight thanks to a late goal from defender Daniel Steres.

The Dynamo have lost just once in their last nine games, while scoring 18 goals in that span. Additionally, Houston recorded its fifth clean sheet of the season tonight and didn’t allow a single shot on goal against the Earthquakes.

Dynamo took the lead in the 86th minute when striker McKinze Gaines left the ball in front Amine Bassiwho centered the ball towards the middle of the area where the defender Daniel Steres He volleyed the ball into the net. The goal was the California native’s first of the season, while the move marked Bassi’s seventh assist.

Houston’s first attempt at goal came in the fifth minute when midfielder Adalberto “Coco” Carrasquilla with a header from a free kick delivered by the captain Hector Herrera. Defender Erik Sviatchenko The header guided the ball towards the target but couldn’t beat goalkeeper Jacob Jackson.

Carrasquilla had a shot on goal in the 14th minute, turning quickly on the edge of the box to create space, but Jackson was again positioned to stop the attempt in the bottom left corner.

San Jose thought they had won a penalty in the 50th minute on a foul between defender Micael and Cristian Espinoza in the box, however, VAR referee Kevin Stott recommended a review and referee Natalie Simon overturned her initial decision.

Herrera fired a powerful ball from outside the box in the 66th minute, but Jack managed to stay in front of the shot to keep the score level.

In the 74th minute, Carrasquilla sent the ball with his heel towards Dorsey in the box, but the defender’s attempt went just over the crossbar.

Houston will next face Vancouver Whitecaps FC at BC Place on Saturday, July 20, with a 9:30 p.m. CT kickoff before the Leagues Cup begins next week. The Dynamo will host LIGA MX side Atlas FC on July 27 and MLS side Real Salt Lake on August 5 in the Leagues Cup group stage. Tickets for those games are available HERE.
