‘Cruel’ sex offender from Limehouse escapes life sentence after raping wife and child and then threatening to do the same to others

An East London man has escaped a life sentence after repeatedly raping a woman and child and then threatening to do the same to others. Dulon Miah, 35, of Dod Street, Limehouse, was found guilty by a jury of 19 counts of sexual assault against the victims following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court on April 24 this year. One of the victims was six years old when the abuse began.

The perpetrator raped the older victim, biting and milking her breasts and abusing her with his tongue and fingers. Miah also raped the child, forced her to touch his genitals and showed them pornography on his mobile phone. Some of the crimes also took place in the presence of other children.

On Wednesday, July 10, prosecutor Rebecca Foulkes asked the judge at Snaresbrook Crown Court to consider a life sentence or a shorter term, citing a victim’s statement that Miah had threatened to do the same to other children when he was finished with them. “He told (the victim) he intended to commit further sexual offences,” the barrister said.

Ms Foulkes also highlighted a probation officer’s view that Miah posed a “high risk of serious sexual harm to children and future partners”. “He has shown no remorse for his actions and continues to deny them. He has shown no insight into his offending and no compassion for the victims,” Ms Foulkes added.

Miah’s most recent victim described suicidal thoughts and self-harming to control the pain he inflicted on them. Describing the horrific physical effects, she said: “Because of what he did to me, I was in constant pain in every part of my body. Sometimes it was painful to sit down because of the pain in my genital area.”

They also recalled a time when Miah strangled her, leaving red marks on her neck. The victim said the abuse had destroyed their trust in men and they could no longer hug people without feeling uncomfortable. They added that the psychological stress had made them belligerent at work, and mentioned an incident where they attacked a friend after he commented on the abuse.

Long-term effects also included eating disorders, arguments with family members and the constant fear that Miah might be the man they saw on the street or drove past in his car. They describe their brave decision to report him as follows: “Today I am relieved because I have disclosed what happened to me. It is over now and the others are safe,” she added.

Miah’s elderly victim said she felt her life was “over” and recalled times when Miah had called her a “prostitute” and a “street dog”. “I think about what happened and I cry. Even if I take a strong sleeping pill, I can’t sleep. Even now I cry without knowing why I’m crying,” she said, adding: “I hope he suffers the pain and suffering he caused me in prison.”

“Ugly and cruel crimes”

Defence lawyer Francis Howard acknowledged that his client’s crimes were “ugly” and that victim statements had shown the impact of his “cruel crimes”. However, Howard insisted that rehabilitation was possible and asked the judge to take this into account when passing sentence. “He is 35 now and I have told him what to expect,” Howard added.

Judge Gerard Pounder KC recalled the details of the trial before imposing an extended sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment plus five years’ probation for the child and a further five years’ imprisonment consecutively for the offences against the woman. The judge said it was “clear” the child had suffered “serious psychological harm” but concluded that Miah’s good character to date prevented him from imposing a life sentence.

Miah’s elderly victim laughed and smiled as the offender was led from the dock. He will also sign the sex offenders’ register for life and be subject to a sexual harm prevention order until further notice.

Detective Constable Lucy Bowman, who led the investigation, said: “We take cases like this incredibly seriously and are proud to have secured justice for these surviving victims while also putting another dangerous offender behind bars.”

“The police take their responsibility to protect women and girls incredibly seriously. We urge anyone who has been a victim of abuse – no matter how long ago – to please come forward to the police and receive the support they are entitled to.”
