Family of woman killed in South LA meets with sheriff over concerns about deputy’s inaction

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The mother of a 22-year-old woman killed in a shooting in South Los Angeles earlier this month met with Sheriff Robert Luna on Wednesday to discuss the actions of a deputy who, according to witnesses, did little to help the injured woman.

Raejonette Morgan was shot and killed on July 2 while driving her car near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and the 105 Freeway on-ramp.

Cellphone video captured the aftermath of the shooting several minutes after it ended, showing Morgan’s white Mercedes stopped on the sidewalk, the driver’s side window and door riddled with bullets.

The woman who shot the video said Morgan was still alive in the car and called for help, but a deputy who first arrived at the scene refused to give her first aid.

Morgan died two days later, on July 4.

A statement from the sheriff’s department said the deputy was unsure if the person in the car was the shooter or a victim and requested backup.

On Wednesday morning, Anginette Morgan, Raejonette’s mother, and community leaders met with Luna and his senior staff to discuss the case.

“I trust the sheriff’s department,” Anginette Morgan said. “I know they’re working as hard as they can. I know it’s going to be a long road, but I feel like we’re going to get to the bottom of this.”

In a statement, the Sheriff’s Department wrote, among other things:

“The sheriff and agency officials had a very open, transparent and cooperative meeting where they listened carefully to the family’s concerns and answered many questions. These conversations with community leaders and the family are very important because they not only strengthen relationships, but also promote trust in law enforcement.

The sheriff discussed the ongoing homicide investigation and assured the family that the department is investigating the entire incident, including the deputy’s response, equipment, training and tactics, to determine if department policies and procedures were followed.”

The deputy in question was not named but is the subject of a critical incident review and has been removed from duty.

The search for Morgan’s killers is still ongoing. If you have any information that could help investigators, please call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
