‘Water incident’ at local lake under investigation | News

Choctaw Lighthorse Police, with assistance from state and local authorities, are investigating a “water incident” that occurred Wednesday afternoon at Lake Talawanda No. 2.

Randy Sachs, a spokesman for the Choctaw Nation, said Lighthorse is investigating the incident because the area belongs to the tribe.

Lake Talawanda No. 1 and No. 2 are owned by the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma; in a court case in the 1980s, the city of McAlester was granted a right of way for the lake’s water rights.

Sachs said he is currently gathering more information and will release it as soon as it is available.

Lighthorse is being assisted by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. The Pittsburg County Swift Water Rescue Team, comprised of several local fire departments and Pittsburg County Emergency Management, was also spotted at the lake Wednesday evening.

Audio data obtained by News-Capital via Broadcastify indicates that two people were involved in the incident.

Sachs said he is currently gathering more information and will release it as soon as it is available.
