I-5 southbound to be closed Friday night in downtown Seattle – KIRO 7 News Seattle

SEATTLE – If you are visiting Seattle or planning to drive through on Interstate 5 (I-5), you should expect a planned full closure heading south.

Beginning at 11:00 p.m. on Friday, July 19, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close all lanes of southbound I-5 near the Seattle Convention Center for scheduled maintenance.

WSDOT maintenance crews will conduct fire protection system tests beneath the Seattle Convention Center.

The planned closure will affect all southbound general purpose lanes from the Stewart Street exit to the Spring Street on-ramp.

During the closure, southbound traffic can either exit at Stewart Street or use the express lanes, which are open to all traffic.

WSDOT will also close the following southbound ramps:

  • Mercer Street Eastbound ramp
  • Yale Avenue/Howell Street ramp
  • Exit to Union Street
  • Exit to James Street

During this time, WSDOT will implement a restriction on flammable cargo.

The work is scheduled to be completed by 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20.

Drivers can find more information on the WSDOT website.
