‘Electrical incident’ leads to evacuation of some buildings on SVC campus | Local news

Burnt-out electric motors caused a partial power outage on the Unity Township campus, which produced smoke. At least one baseboard heater was also damaged, Schultheis said. No fire was detected.

At least five buildings were affected – Alfred and Placid Halls, Headmasters Hall, the Convent and the Post Office.

Most of the smoke was found in the basements and first floors of the buildings, Schultheis said.

People were evacuated from the buildings, but around 8 p.m. everyone was allowed to re-enter the buildings, except for the monastery, which was still being searched.

Mutual aid was available in case the eight patients in the infirmary had to be moved. In addition, there were at least five employees in the infirmary.

The Pennsylvania State Police also responded.

Schultheis could not say whether rain showers that passed through the area about an hour earlier or the heat could have played a role in the partial power outage. He added that there had been a power outage about a week ago, but he did not know whether that could be related.

West Penn Power was notified and maintenance crews were dispatched to the substation.

In addition to the Lloydsville VFD, numerous other departments responded, including St. Vincent, Youngstown-Whitney, Pleasant Unity, Marguerite, Dryridge, City of Latrobe, Bradenville and Crabtree.
