Woman found dead in Houston apartment without power for over a week

A 69-year-old woman has been found dead inside her apartment, which was reportedly without power for more than a week following Hurricane Beryl.

The Houston Fire Department tells PEOPLE that the victim, who has not yet been publicly identified, was found inside his apartment at 5353 Institute Lane around 11:30 a.m. local time on Tuesday, July 16.

The medical examiner’s office has not determined the cause of death, according to the department.

CBS affiliate KHOU reported that the woman, who had health issues, was spending the night inside her apartment during the power outage.

It was Pat Baker, the neighbor whose daughter was renting the apartment to the woman, who found the victim.

“I came to check on her and she didn’t respond,” Baker told the outlet. “I unlocked the door and found her.”

“It makes me sad that she’s up there in this heat,” another neighbor remarked.

CenterPoint electrical crews reportedly arrived later that afternoon, and the property manager told KHOU that power was finally restored that day.

PEOPLE has reached out to CenterPoint Energy for additional comment.

More than 35,000 CenterPoint customers in the Houston area were still without power as of Wednesday morning, July 17, according to the Houston Chronicle.

“We are deeply grateful for the tireless efforts of our mutual aid teams who dropped everything to help our communities when we needed it most,” Lynnae Wilson, senior vice president of CenterPoint’s electric business, said in a July 17 press release.

More than two dozen people in southwest Texas have died from the hurricane as of July 17, ABC affiliate KTRK reported.
