According to local authorities in Piracicaba, the dumping of industrial waste into the Tijuco Preto stream, which flows into the affected Piracicaba river, could be the cause of the mass fish deaths.

The fish deaths have caused concern among local fishermen.

According to local media, this is the second time the river has been littered with dead fish. On July 7, thousands of fish died at the same spot.
