Salvation Army Service Shifts to Support Distribution in Houston After Hurricane Beryl

Dallas, Texas (July 17, 2024) – As power is nearing full restoration in Houston and the surrounding area, The Salvation Army’s power operations are being scaled back to distribution support. Multiple supply distributions are planned throughout the region in the coming days.

The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team is working to support several local supply distributions, starting with the Salvation Army’s Freeport location (1618 N Avenue J, Freeport, TX 77541) on Wednesday, followed by several distributions to school districts and apartment complexes later in the week, and partnering with Valero on Thursday. Food boxes containing a weekly supply of non-perishable food items, cleaning kits consisting of a bucket, gloves, broom, mop, bleach, mask, scrub brush and more, and cases of water will be available at the distribution sites.

“As power has been restored to neighborhoods across the city this week, we have seen a steady decline in the need for hot meals. This is a good sign that people are finally getting back on their feet and getting back to normal,” said Alvin Migues, Salvation Army Texas EDS director. “Our trained staff, volunteers and Baptist partners have worked extremely hard this week in incredibly hot and humid conditions. More than 70,000 people have received nutritious hot meals, cold water, prayer and encouragement each day from Salvation Army teams. Ten mobile feeding units will continue to serve meals in strategic locations on Wednesday, and as the week progresses, we plan to scale back meal service and focus our efforts on supporting supply distributions.”

CenterPoint Energy Foundation has made a donation to support the relief efforts of the Salvation Army and other relief organizations following Hurricane Beryl. Their hands-on assistance will help offset the cost of more than 80,000 meals. “Thank you to CenterPoint Energy Foundation for your generational gift and support of The Salvation Army as we respond to the needs of those impacted by the storm in Houston and beyond.”

The Salvation Army has served 68,270 meals, 59,981 beverages, 10,118 snacks, 2,820 ice packs, 961 food boxes and made 9,999 emotional and spiritual care contacts since the service began Tuesday, July 9 in impacted communities in Houston and Southeast Texas.
