San Diego firefighter dies in car accident on way to work

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The San Diego Fire Department announced the death of one of its firefighters Wednesday.

Matthew R. Sendejo was in a fatal car accident on his way to work last Friday.

Sendejo was a firefighter with nine years of experience and a dedicated member of his department.

SDFF said that during Hurricane Harvey operations in Port Aransas in 2017, it helped its community and surrounding areas and responded to several emergency calls from people in need of assistance.

The department said in a social media post that he played an important role in the organization’s morale: “(We) lost a huge part of our department. Matt was the soul and our jokester… Matt was always happy and full of life. No matter what was going on in his personal life, he was always happy and found ways to make other people laugh and happy even when he wasn’t trying at all lol.”

The firefighter’s funeral is scheduled to take place on July 27 at 8 a.m. in San Diego.
