District Attorney says suspect fired shots before being killed by police

WEST JORDAN, Utah — Nearly a year after a fatal police shooting near West Jordan, The Salt Lake County District Attorney declined to file charges against the three officers involved.

Aaron Zimmerman, 49, was shot and killed by police on August 24, 2023, in an unincorporated area of Salt Lake County between Kearns and West Jordan.

FOX 13 News previously reported that the incident began with a series of domestic violence calls, with the first beginning at 9 p.m.

When officers arrived, they briefly handcuffed Zimmerman and then handed him over to a friend, Gill said.

Hours later, three officers were dispatched again because Zimmerman had returned to the house and was “causing trouble,” Gill said.

According to Gill, when they searched for Zimmerman they found him hiding behind garbage cans and armed with a small pistol.

Within seconds, Zimmerman and the officers exchanged shots, and Zimmerman was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the investigation, it emerged that Zimmerman fired four shots at one of the officers while pursuing her as she took cover behind a car.

The body camera video, when slowed down and zoomed in, showed Zimmerman looking out from behind the trash can and pointing a gun at the officers.

In total, officers fired between 18 and 22 shots at Zimmerman, Gill reported.

The three officers involved in the critical incident were placed on leave immediately after the shooting. In a statement Wednesday, Gill said his office would not file charges in the case.
