Houston Roughnecks select MTSU safety Tra Fluellen in UFL draft

Former Middle Tennessee State football player Tra Fluellen was selected by the Houston Roughnecks in the second round (10th overall) of the United Football League college draft on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Fluellen will play near his hometown of Gilmer, Texas. He also spent two seasons at Houston Christian before transferring to MTSU.

Fluellen finished third on the Blue Raiders with 64 tackles (2.5 for loss), a team-high three interceptions and three pass breakups in 10 games (nine starts) in 2023. He played three seasons at MTSU after transferring.

He had 323 career tackles, eight interceptions and 23 pass breakups combined between Houston Christian and MTSU.

Fluellen is recovering from a season-ending ACL injury he suffered in a game against FIU in November. The injury kept him out of a pro day and he was not selected in the NFL draft.

He was named to the Bronco Nagurski Award watch list, the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award watch list, the Senior Bowl watch list and was an All-Conference USA honorable mention during his senior season.

Fluellen showed grit when the competition was toughest. Against rival Western Kentucky as a senior, he had eight tackles, a pass deflection and a 20-yard interception return. He led the team with nine tackles (one for loss) against Missouri. He had eight tackles and a 27-yard interception return against New Mexico State.
