Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his six-year-old stepdaughter

The Pretoria Magistrate Court has sentenced a 31-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of his six-year-old stepdaughter.

According to Lumka Mahanjana, the regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the mother is said to have left the victim in the care of the man on 6 August 2022, the day of the incident, while she went to Mamelodi.

While the child was playing outside, the man called her into the hut, where he ordered her to undress. He also undressed himself and began to rape the child.

“The mother left the victim in the care of the man while she went to Mamelodi. While the child was playing outside, the man called her into the hut where he ordered her to undress. He also undressed himself and began to rape the child. He then told her not to tell anyone what had happened.”

Mahanjana says the man was arrested on August 7, 2022, after the judge rejected his bail application.

“The man has been in custody since the state successfully rejected his request for release on bail.”

Mahanjana says Attorney-General Sibongile Mzinyathi welcomes the sentences and hopes they will have a deterrent effect on potential offenders.

“Attorney General Sibongile Mzinyathi welcomes the verdicts and commends the work of the investigating officer and the prosecutor.

“He also hopes that the verdict will have a deterrent effect on those who might commit such crimes and that it will bring some justice and closure to the victim and her family.”
