Dog killed in house fire east of Kearney

LINCOLN, Nebraska (KLKN) – A dog was killed in a house fire in rural Buffalo County Tuesday evening, the sheriff’s office said.

Volunteer fire departments from Gibbon, Shelton and Kearney battled the fire at a home near Navaho and 39th Road, east of Kearney.

Investigators believe that a lightning strike caused the fire. The people in the house were able to escape safely, but a dog died in the fire.

In a Facebook post, the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office thanked firefighters for their “quick and courageous response.”

“Your commitment to our community does not go unnoticed,” the agency said.
