Yemeni Houthi rebels attack oil tanker

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have released a video of an attack they allegedly carried out on an oil tanker in the Red Sea.

The footage shows a small ship approaching and then colliding with the left side of the ship, causing a massive explosion.

BBC Verify has confirmed that the tanker shown in the video is the CHIOS Lion by comparing the video with known images of the ship.

Ship tracking data shows that the CHIOS Lion departed from the Russian port of Tuapse on July 2 and reached the Red Sea on July 11.

There is no tracking data available on its journey through the Red Sea, but the time and location of impact on July 15, as reported by UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), are consistent with the speed and direction the tanker was traveling.
