Man in police custody after alleged knife incident in South Perth, highway closed

His injuries are probably not life-threatening.

Western Australia Police said they have taken a man into custody after finding him near the Como Bowling Club. It is not clear if he is an adult or a minor.

Police said the investigation was still ongoing. They had previously stated that they were looking for two people in connection with the incident.

The Canning Highway between Douglas Avenue and South Terrace remains closed. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

‘Confrontation’ scene: witness

Hairdresser Paul O’Sullivan works in the area and said he left the shop when he heard a commotion on Canning Highway.

“There was a guy lying on the ground on the sidewalk across the street and some cars had stopped by him,” he told ABC Radio Perth.

“There was blood everywhere.

“It was quite confronting.”

Mr O’Sullivan said he estimated the victim to be in his mid to late 20s.

“There were two younger guys in the driveway. When they saw us, they ran down the driveway into the parking lot and then into the side street,” he said.

“They pulled their hoodies over their heads and ran away.”

Mr O’Sullivan said he kept an eye on the pair to keep police informed and later went to the scene where the victim was injured.

“On the sidewalk next to him was a large tomahawk axe that looked like a pickaxe,” he said.
