Dog attack sends 6-year-old to intensive care – NBC Los Angeles

A six-year-old girl remains in intensive care after being seriously injured by two large dogs at her grandmother’s house over the weekend.

Scarlett Corona’s family is praying for a full recovery as the child undergoes a third surgery to treat her wounds. They told NBC4 that she was playing outside her grandmother’s house on Sunday when the attack happened.

“I didn’t know what kind of illness it was, I just knew,” said Starr Aranda, Scarlett’s mother. “They said, ‘Go to the hospital. Your little girl was bitten by a dog.'”

Aranda remembers getting the heartbreaking call about her daughter’s seizure while she was on her way to dinner. She quickly changed direction and headed straight to Children’s Hospital of Orange County.

“She was torn apart by an animal,” Aranda said emotionally.

Corona suffered at least three bites on her back, a severed main artery in her leg and several cuts on both legs. She had to undergo immediate reconstructive surgery.

“She is undergoing surgery right now,” Aranda said. “I ask everyone to pray for my baby.”

At 6 years old, Corona is the eldest of four children. Her siblings are between 2 months and 5 years old.

“I had a baby two months ago and she is the most amazing big sister,” Aranda said. “She is full of life and I know she will get through this.”

Aranda also described her daughter as a ballet dancer who enjoys helping others. She will now spend at least the next month in the hospital.

Corona’s family said they didn’t know much about the attack, but Aranda said she later learned the dogs were in a kennel. Somehow they escaped.

“I wish these animals were properly trained,” Aranda said. “I want to educate everyone, moms, dads, aunts, uncles. If you know your dogs are not safe around other people, lock them up.”

Ontario police are investigating the disturbing attack. It is unclear who the dogs belong to or if their owners will face charges. It is not clear where the dogs are now.

While the family cares for the injured girl, they started an online fundraiser to help the girl with her medical expenses.
