Toronto – Members of the Ethiopian Defense Forces reportedly raped 35 female students from Sede Muja and Semada districts in the South Gondar region of Ethiopia last week.

The Ethiopian Media Service (EMS) said that relatives of the victims reported on Tuesday that the girls were high school students taking the 12th grade final exam at Debre Tabor University. They took the exams between Wednesday and Friday.

It happened on July 13, 2024. They reportedly returned to their families accompanied by members of the Defense Forces. However, the girls had to spend the night at the Defense Forces camp in Guna district and were then taken to their parents in Sede Muja and Semada districts, a person who identified himself as the brother of one of the victims told EMS.

According to reports, some of the students have informed their parents and taken them to the hospital for examination. It does not seem to be the case that the incident is reported to the authorities in the area.

The Ethiopian armed forces have not responded to the allegation. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission or other human rights organizations in Ethiopia have not yet reported the incident.

Reputable human rights organizations report massive human rights violations in the Ethiopian region of Amhara – including extrajudicial killings of unarmed civilians and, in some cases, rape.

During the two-year war between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and Abiy Ahmed’s federal government, the defense forces were involved in numerous rape cases in the Tigray region.

Since August 2023, the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been conducting a military operation in Ethiopia’s Amhara region. So far, hundreds of unarmed civilians have been killed and there seems to be no end to the war in sight.
