Crime in Houston, Texas: Man killed in hit-and-run on North Shore

A 33-year-old man was killed after reportedly breaking up a fight near a gas station at Veteran’s Memorial Dr. and W. Gulf Bank Road. The driver fled the scene.

HOUSTON — Houston police seek suspect in fatal hit-and-run in the north of the city on Tuesday.

The incident happened around 5:20 a.m. near a gas station at the corner of Veteran’s Memorial Drive and W. Gulf Bank Road.

Police are sharing cellphone videos of the incident and surveillance photos in hopes of finding the suspect.

According to HPD, they say a good Samaritan lost his life.

“He was doing the right thing. He prevented a fight and lost his life because of it,” HPD Homicide Detective Alexander Vinogradov told KHOU 11 News.

Police said a man in his 50s wearing a white shirt and blue shorts was caught on camera running over a 33-year-old victim with what is described as a gray 2003 Chevy Silverado, with the license plate TDY9548.

According to the witness’ cellphone video, the two men were involved in an altercation of some sort. HPD said there was a fight between at least three groups of men.

In a cellphone video, the suspect can be seen getting into his truck and shifting into gear. Witnesses can be heard screaming moments before the impact.

“Be careful,” shouted a passerby.

The driver ran over the victim and nearly hit another man before leaving the scene. Police said the victim was well-known in the area.

“Talking to the clerk, he is a very nice boy. He is an adult but (the clerk) treats him like a child, very calm, very polite, he hangs around but does not cause any trouble,” said detective Vinogradov.

Anyone who has seen the suspect or has information about the case is asked to call Houston police.
