Green River Police and Fire Department receive new mobile data terminals for vehicles

GREEN RIVER — Green River’s fire and police departments will receive new mobile data terminals after the Green River City Council approved a bid to purchase them by a 6-0 vote. Council member Sherry Bushman was absent from the meeting due to health reasons, Mayor Pete Rust said.

iT1’s bid was for $141,160, which will fund 38 MDTs that will replace all of the fire and police departments’ MDTs. City Finance Director Chris Meats said it’s time for new MDTs because the current ones are four years old.

MDTs are computerized devices used by emergency services to communicate with the dispatcher in the vehicle. Meats said they are “more robust” than a standard computer. He also said the devices can often cost $5,000 a piece, so iT1’s offer is not as high as expected.

“We are very happy about this,” said Meats.

The Council also approved a $70,000 memorandum of understanding with the City of Rock Springs and Sweetwater County for the Sweetwater Economic Development Coalition. This memorandum of understanding allows Green River to participate in a unified countywide economic development initiative to diversify and strengthen the county’s economic base.

City Manager Reed Clevenger said the donation will help fund Kayla McDonald’s position as economic development specialist for SEDC, as well as some marketing efforts, the SEDC website and working with regional and national businesses to generate leads.

Clevenger said the SEDC board was recently updated and that they are working with McDonald to look at different levels of economic development they can pursue between the different units of the coalition. He said this includes looking at housing coordinators, business attraction firms and consulting work.
