Police chief of Falfurrias suspended for five days

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Falfurrias Police Chief William Barton was temporarily suspended Monday during the city’s regular city council meeting.

Barton was suspended for five days without pay and placed on six months’ probation, Falfurrias Mayor Justo Ramirez said Tuesday evening.

He said because the discussion took place during a closed session, he was not authorized to say what led to the suspension and referred 3NEWS to City Manager Martin Saenz.

There has been no return call to Saenz’s calls shortly before 5 p.m.

There were two items on the agenda for Monday’s closed meeting: one concerning a “personnel matter pursuant to Section 551.074 of the Texas Government Code to advise the appointment, evaluation, reassignment, duties and/or disciplinary action with respect to” Barton, and another concerning Andrea Ochoa, the police department’s senior administrative assistant.
