Sheriff: Marin nurse rapes elderly patient and ‘brutally’ attacks her and her daughter

(KRON) — An elderly Marin County woman was raped and beaten by her caregiver on Sunday. The Marin County Sheriff’s Department said she, her daughter and the caregiver’s friend were “brutally” beaten after the rape.

According to the sheriff’s office, suspect Yumi Zinghkai, 23, of Rohnert Park, was the paid caregiver for an elderly woman. The woman suffered from memory problems “and is unable to care for herself or make decisions for herself.”

Around 5:30 p.m., police received calls reporting that Zinghkai “violently attacked his elderly patient and her daughter before the caregiver fled the home,” the sheriff’s office said.

According to the elderly woman’s daughter, when she arrived, Zinghkai was in the process of “sexually assaulting” her mother. When the daughter screamed at the caregiver to stop, Zinghkai “grabbed the daughter by the neck and choked her until she lost consciousness,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Zinghkai then “dragged her unconscious body into the kitchen, where (the daughter) woke up, and Zinghkai held her at knifepoint.” According to the sheriff’s office, he threatened to kill her “if she called the police.”

After being “held captive for nearly two hours,” the daughter was able to convince the caretaker to leave the house to “take care of personal matters that were important to (Zinghkai).” Once Zinghkai left the house, the daughter was able to call 9-1-1, the sheriff’s office said.

Zinghkai eventually went home to his girlfriend, to whom he immediately confessed his suicidal thoughts. When he “had to return to his elderly patient,” his girlfriend accompanied him in his car.

Fearing she might hear of Zhingkai’s suicidal thoughts, the girlfriend attempted to call 9-1-1 in the car. Zinghkai then “took the phone from her and began hitting her while driving,” striking his girlfriend “multiple times” in the car.

Zinghkai arrived at the residence to find police officers. Zinghkai attempted to flee by pushing his girlfriend “out of the moving vehicle.” The sheriff’s office said he was arrested by officers during his escape attempt.

According to the sheriff’s office, Zinghkai was arrested on a variety of charges, including:

  • Rape
  • Attempted murder
  • Abuse of vulnerable seniors
  • kidnapping
  • Indecent and lascivious act by a caregiver towards an adult in need of care
  • Bodily harm causing serious injury
  • robbery
  • Dissuade a witness
  • Destroy evidence
  • Pointing/brandishing a weapon
  • Domestic violence
  • Harm to Victim Phone Attempt to call 911

He is currently being held in jail without bail pending arraignment, the sheriff’s office said.
