SFPD seeks suspect who violently attacked disabled person after harassing a Waymo vehicle

A person described by San Francisco Police as “cognitively impaired” suffered a skull fracture in a recent nighttime attack. The suspect also attempted to pick a fight with a self-driving Waymo. Police are now searching for the brown-haired male suspect pictured below.

We just learned of a brutal attack that apparently occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, July 5, in the 2300 block of Buchanan Street near Pacific Heights. According to KPIX, the SFPD describes the victim of the attack as “cognitively impaired” and “visibly disabled,” and the alleged attacker caused the victim a skull fracture and life-threatening injuries.

As the Chronicle adds, the suspect attempted to provoke a self-driving Waymo car before attacking the disabled victim.

San Francisco Police have released a video showing the prelude to the incident shown above. According to KPIX, the video was recorded by the victim. The suspect appears to be preparing for a confrontation with Waymo, taunting it with remarks such as “We’re friends, come on Waymo, we’re f***ing friends” and “You told me you’d f***ing work for me!”

In the video, the Waymo vehicle can be heard saying in a robotic voice: “Unsafe behavior detected.”

According to a statement from the SFPD, “The Waymo vehicle was occupied by a passenger with whom the victim was speaking. This passenger is currently unidentified.” However, the victim of the attack allegedly told the suspect to just let the car continue driving, at which point the suspect allegedly attacked the victim, causing him “life-threatening injuries, including a skull fracture,” according to the SFPD.
