6 people, including 2 Americans, found dead in Bangkok hotel

Six people, including two Americans, were found dead at a luxury hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday, officials said.

The victims, two Vietnamese Americans and four Vietnamese citizens, may have been poisoned in a murder, said Bangkok police chief Lt. Gen. Thiti Sangsawang.

Her identity and age were not disclosed.

Three men and three women had booked multiple rooms at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel. A seventh person, who was part of the same booking, remains missing and is a possible suspect.

The bodies were found by a maid after the guests failed to check out. The door was locked from the inside. They appear to have died about 24 hours before police arrived.

There was food left over from room service, but drinks were consumed, the boss said. There were suspicious residues in some cups, which were collected as evidence.

The police assume that the victims “did not injure themselves”.

“We are not saying they were poisoned,” Thiti told a news conference. “We are considering the possibility that their lives were deliberately targeted. There is a suspicion that someone intended to harm or kill this group of people.”

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said it was neither a robbery nor a random attack.

“Our hypothesis is that they ingested something that killed them,” Srettha said.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the US government was monitoring the situation and was ready to provide “consular assistance” to the victims’ families.
