IDEM introduces new Beach Alert reporting system

There are few things more frustrating than planning a day at the beach only to find out that the beach is closed. But thanks to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s (IDEM) updated BeachAlert notification system, beachgoers can “know before they go”!

BeachAlert allows residents to sign up for text and email alerts about beach warnings and closures based on bacteria levels. More than 35 beaches participate in the program, providing real-time status updates on beach conditions. BeachAlert also allows users to check if their favorite beaches are under a contamination warning or beach closure, review water sample results, and get information about the organization responsible for monitoring the beach.

“Hundreds of thousands of people visit Indiana’s beaches on Lake Michigan each year for water fun and recreation,” said IDEM Commissioner Brian Rockensuess. “BeachAlert is an incredible, customizable tool that helps beachgoers plan their visit to their favorite beaches.”
