North Houston man hit by van after breaking up fight

David McKinney, 32, was killed by a man in a Chevy pickup truck after trying to break up a fight in north Houston.

According to the Houston Police Department, the crime happened around 5 a.m. in the parking lot of a gas station at Veterans Memorial Drive and Gulf Bank Road.

Police say an unidentified suspect got into his truck and ran over McKinney, killing him. The incident was caught on camera.

“This morning when I got there, he was lying on the floor, he was still there with a sheet over him, and it was a pretty sad moment,” said McKinney’s friend Crystal Roberts.

The community honored McKinney by erecting a makeshift memorial at the very spot where he took his last breath.

“He was a good guy. He helped people who didn’t even deserve it,” said Wade, a friend of McKinney’s.

Police told KPRC 2 they identified the suspect after finding his wallet at the scene, but have not yet released his name.

They are also looking for the vehicle he was seen using in the video, which is described as a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado with a Texas license plate reading: TDY-9548.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
