Man survives bull shark attack in Florida Keys – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – A man is sharing his story after being attacked by a shark during a recent spearfishing trip in the Florida Keys.

Jose Abreau was spearfishing with friends and his children off the coast of Key West on Monday. While in the water, he saw a bull shark swimming toward him.

“He’s too fast, he’s too fast. All I’m saying is this is the end of me,” Jose Abreau said.

Abreau said it took the shark 13 seconds to bite him on the shoulder, chest and right leg.

“You don’t have time, you don’t have time to do nothing,” Abreau said.

Fortunately, his friend noticed the attack, quickly jumped into the water and bravely swam towards the shark, where he thrust a spear into its mouth.

As the shark swam away, Abreau’s friend called for help and had him flown by helicopter to Jackson South Medical Center.

The man said he is still alive today thanks to the quick response of his friend and first responders.

“I’m here because of my friend,” Abreau said. “He saved my life.”

Abreau advises never to go spearfishing alone.

“If you fish alone, you have no chance, you don’t get any opportunity for free,” he said.

Abreau said he is in good spirits as he recovers from his injuries and plans to begin physical therapy in the next few days.
