Six people who were found dead in a luxury hotel in Bangkok were foaming at the mouth after suspected poisoning, police said.

The three men and three women – four Vietnamese citizens and two Vietnamese Americans – were in a room that was locked from the inside.

There were no signs of a struggle or injury and it appears that nothing was stolen.

Police chief Thiti Sangsawang said room service food had not been consumed, but drinks had been consumed – with “unidentified substances” at the bottom of the cups.

Four of the bodies were in the living room and two in the bedroom, he added.

The victims all arrived at the Grand Hyatt Erwan Hotel at different times and stayed in five different rooms.

However, one person seems to be missing as the rooms were originally booked for seven people.

According to police, the bodies were found by a chambermaid after one of them failed to report.

Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin visited the scene and told reporters that the victims were found at around 4.30 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

He said they were believed to have been dead for about 24 hours.

“From the initial examination of the bodies, it appears that the cause of death could be something they consumed,” Mr Thavisin said.

An initial report claiming there had been a shooting was denied by a local police official.
