Lawton resident found dead at Missouri military base identified

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Missouri (KFDX/KJTL) – A soldier with ties to Texoma who was found dead in a barracks at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri on July 12 has been identified.

Cpl. Robert Wilson III, 23, was found unconscious with a gunshot wound in a quarters on the base, according to Ozark Radio News. The source reported that he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:15 a.m. on Friday, July 12, 2024.


According to the Fort Leonard Wood press office, Wilson’s residence records show him as being in Lawton, Oklahoma.

Wilson was a human resources noncommissioned officer assigned to the 84th Chemical Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood.

This incident remains under investigation by Fort Leonard Wood law enforcement and the Army Criminal Investigation Division, according to a press release from base management.

“Our deepest condolences and sincere sympathy go out to the Soldier’s family, friends and unit during this difficult time,” said Maj. Gen. Chris Beck, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and commanding general of Fort Leonard Wood. “Our primary concern is to care for the family and those affected and ensure they receive all the resources and support they need during this time.”

Fort Leonard Wood is a military training facility in Pulaski County, Missouri.
