Recall Alert: Lucid Air – Kelley Blue Book

Exclusively electric car manufacturer Clear has a recall for 5,251 Air limousines from model years 2022 and 2023, as these may lose drive power.

The company told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the problem involves overcautious safety software. When the vehicle detects a loose connection, a safety mechanism disconnects certain electrical connections to prevent injury to a technician repairing parts. This action can cause the vehicle to lose all power even while driving.

The company says it has updated the connector manufacturing processes and has “not experienced a power outage” since the changes. However, some Air sedans manufactured before this update may still be vulnerable.

A software update fixes the problem by ensuring that the connections are not opened until the car stops, allowing owners to get to safety before the connections are disconnected.

Most vehicles have already received the software via an over-the-air update. Owners who have chosen to disable automatic updates “will be notified via email and first-class mail and will receive instructions on how to update their software to the latest version. They can also contact Lucid Customer Service or a Lucid Service Center if they need assistance with software updates.”
