Woman arrested after chase after attempting to disarm police officer during physical altercation – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) – A woman was arrested Friday after she fled from police and then attempted to disarm a Bartholomew County police officer during a physical altercation in a high school parking lot.

A news release from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy was driving north on State Street around 3 p.m. Friday when he saw a silver SUV traveling south at about 80 mph. Deputies say the SUV was also veering and recklessly passing other cars.

The deputy turned on his hazard lights and raced to catch up with the SUV.

The driver of the SUV, identified as Samaya Ivory, eventually turned onto Marr Road and pulled into the East High School parking lot. Ivory parked, got out and continued the pursuit on foot.

The sheriff’s office says the deputy repeatedly told Ivory to stop. She ignored the orders and ran to various school doors to try to open them, but all were locked.

A Columbus Police Department officer assisting in the chase grabbed Ivory by one arm, but she resisted. The officer grabbed Ivory as well, and eventually all three fell to the ground.

The officer then said he felt Ivory pulling on his gun until they restrained her arms. Other officers came to help and Ivory was eventually taken into custody.

During the altercation, the MP suffered “abrasions to both elbows and knees.”

Ivory was taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for a medical evaluation, where she kicked another officer in the chest. She was later taken to the Bartholomew County Jail for 72 hours.

Ivory is charged with reckless driving, two counts of assault on a police officer, resisting police with bodily harm and attempting to disarm a police officer.

Deputies added that Ivory had been reported missing by Columbus police, but they did not provide information on how long she had been missing or how old she was.
