More severe storms possible in northern New York State

A day after damaging storms brought strong winds, large hail and heavy rain, the Rochester area remains in the crosshairs of another storm from mid-morning through early evening.

There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms in Monroe County and areas to the west and southwest, while areas to the east and south have a lower risk. The main threat from the storms will be locally destructive wind gusts and isolated heavy hail, although locally torrential rain is also possible.

Severe storms possible in the Rochester, NY area

Showers and thunderstorms are expected in Rochester, mainly between noon and 3 p.m., some of which could be heavy, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo. Another 0.5 to 0.75 inches are possible during that time, with a 90% chance of precipitation. There is a slight risk of excessive precipitation in the Rochester area, especially to the south and east.

The storm, which arrived in the Northeast, moved through the Midwest on Monday, triggering hundreds of storm reports and a 75-mph wind gust at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, according to AccuWeather. The storms could spawn an isolated tornado that will affect most of New York state.

Further showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected through Wednesday with the arrival of a cold front from the Great Lakes, but a subsequent high pressure system is likely to bring a longer period of dry and less humid weather.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center updated the severe weather forecast on Tuesday morning, adding an enhanced danger, the third highest risk level, for Central New York and parts of the east. The weather service’s risk in the part of the state that includes Buffalo increases eastward.

Heat warning for Finger Lakes and Southern Tier

A heat warning is also in effect for Yates, Steuben and Seneca counties today. The heat index in the affected region is expected to be above 95 degrees. With such high heat and humidity, there is a risk of heat-related illnesses. Therefore, people in the warning zone should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms and avoid the sun.
