Communities offer relief from scorching heat

As temperatures rise, communities across the Hudson Valley are taking steps to keep residents cool and safe.

At Doyle Park in Yonkers, members of the Yonkers Fire Department set up a special sprinkler system for children to beat the heat from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, in Newburgh, residents can cool off at the fire hydrants on Walsh Road behind the Mullins Apartments, which are open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

For weeks, health officials have been warning about the dangers of extreme heat and urging people to use cooling centers, swimming pools and beaches.

Local doctors are seeing an increase in heat exhaustion, dehydration and severe sunburns. Dr. Juliette Provenzano-Gober of Urgent Care of Westchester in Tarrytown says the heat creates additional challenges for people with underlying health conditions.

“The weather makes it so much harder for everyone to regulate their temperature and get the fluids and electrolytes they need,” said Dr. Provenzano-Gober.
