Questions about Richard Simmons’ death remain unanswered.

An investigation into the cause of the fitness guru’s death has been launched, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to People on July 15.

In addition, the medical examiner’s office has declared the fitness guru’s cause of death deferred pending the outcome of the investigation, according to documents reviewed by E! News.

The update comes two days after Simmons, 76, died at his home in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills. After authorities responded to a 911 call from his home early in the morning, the “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” star was found unconscious and pronounced dead at the scene, NBC News reports.

Simmons, known for his unwavering positivity, had remained true to himself before the tragedy, and just one day earlier he had nothing but kind words for his fans on the occasion of his 76th birthday.

“Thank you… I have never received so many messages on my birthday in my life!” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, July 12. “I’m sitting here writing emails. Have a wonderful rest of your Friday!”

Simmons also posted a thank you message on Facebook, telling his fans in a separate message: “So many of you have sent me birthday wishes on Facebook and other platforms. I really appreciate it. I don’t know when your birthday is but I wish you all the best and all the best!”

Fitness icon Richard Simmons has died at the age of 76, according to law enforcement sources.

Following the news of his death, Simmons’ brother Lenny Simmons said his family was “in shock” before urging his fans to stay positive about the death of the Slimmons gym founder.

“I don’t want people to be sad about my brother,” he said in a statement to E! News. “I want them to remember him because he brought real joy and love to people. He genuinely cared about people. He called, wrote and emailed thousands of people throughout his career to offer them help.”

His brother added: “So don’t be sad. Celebrate his life.”
