Used car owners should beware of dangerous, inferior replacement airbags

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is warning anyone who has purchased a used car.

The warning came after three people were killed and two others seriously injured by retrofitted airbag inflators.

NHTSA urges used car buyers and owners to be alert for potentially inferior replacement airbag inflators in their vehicles.

These gas generators can malfunction in the event of an accident, causing large metal fragments to be thrown directly at the driver, or they can open too slowly.

The NHTSA advises people who may not know the full history of their vehicle to look for replacement airbags and contact their dealer or a reputable service center.
