Mobile phone services suspended in Peshawar

Mobile communications will remain suspended until tomorrow; BRT has also been shut down and will resume operations on July 18

PESHAWAR:

As part of extensive measures to maintain peace during the religious celebrations, mobile phone service in Peshawar was suspended on Tuesday, 9 Muharram.

The services will also be unavailable tomorrow, 10 Muharram, confirmed Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Qasim Ali Khan.

BRT traffic was also completely stopped.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Peshawar Qasim Ali Khan has announced a security plan for Muharram, which details the deployment of 14,000 personnel for security services in Peshawar until Ashura.

The city center was completely sealed off on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

The processions are monitored by video surveillance cameras. In addition to the police, troops from the Frontier Constabulary are also deployed.

The Frontier Constabulary, a federal paramilitary force under the supervision of the Pakistani Interior Minister, recruits members predominantly from Pakistan and is deployed in various districts across the country.

CCPO Peshawar also mentioned that snipers were stationed on tall buildings along the procession routes.

In addition to 140 surveillance cameras, drone cameras are also used for enhanced security monitoring.

BRT service will resume from July 18, Muharram 11.

Yesterday, the Punjab government announced that it would suspend mobile communications at certain locations in the province on the occasion of 9th and 10th Muharram-ul-Haram.

However, it was announced that mobile services will not be completely suspended in any city, but will be partially suspended only in areas where processions and gatherings are expected from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on both days.
