NBTC orders blocking of 2.14 million mobile phone numbers

Previously, the NBTC had blocked services for 1.096 million mobile phone numbers of owners of more than 100 SIM cards after they failed to meet the registration deadline.

Nathathorn added that the NBTC was also asked by the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) to verify about 80 million mobile phone numbers linked to about 113.568 million mobile banking accounts.

He said the NBTC has asked mobile operators to verify whether the owners of the SIM cards are also the owners of the mobile bank accounts. This verification should be completed by September, he added.

Nathathorn also said the NBTC had worked with the Royal Thai Police to arrest 29 suspects this year who had installed secret amplifiers to improve mobile phone signals across the border and help call center gangs based in border towns.

He said the NBTC had blocked access to 465 illegal cell phone repeaters along the border and destroyed 179 of them in the five border provinces of Tak, Chiang Rai, Sa Kaew, Chanthaburi and Ranong.

By July 11, the NBTC, police and customs officials raided shops in Bangkok’s Suan Luang and Wattana districts and seized 6,000 illegal telecommunications devices worth 12 million baht.
