Vehicle involved in San Diego police chase overturns on I-8 near Old Town, causing traffic jam – NBC 7 San Diego

A vehicle being pursued by San Diego police on Monday overturned on eastbound Interstate 8 near Old Town, causing backups in the area, officials said. The driver is still at large.

According to San Diego police, officers attempted to stop the vehicle for an expired registration around 5:10 p.m. near Friars Road and Sea World Drive.

The driver failed to stop and struck at least one innocent vehicle on the southbound Interstate 5 ramp at Sea World Drive before the pursuit vehicle overturned on I-8, where a second collision occurred, police said.

The driver then jumped over the center lane and ran toward Hotel Circle and Presidio, the SDPD said.

The passenger in the pursuit vehicle was arrested and taken to a nearby hospital with injuries from the accident, police said. It is not yet known whether charges will be brought against her.

No one in the other vehicles was injured, the department said.

According to Caltrans San Diego, the overturned vehicle blocked the four left lanes of eastbound I-8 near Taylor Street.

At 5:35 p.m., the California Highway Patrol issued a one-hour SigAlert due to the traffic backup.

Further details were not immediately available.

This is a developing story and will be updated as new information arrives.
