ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) — A candidate for Monroe County County Clerk called for an immediate investigation into what he says is criminal activity in the County Clerk’s office.

In 2022, at least $32,000 in checks sent to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were stolen, altered, forged and cashed. An investigation was underway at the time by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Vazques claims that current county clerk Jamie Romeo failed to keep the public informed about the investigation – and suggests the theft was far larger than initially known.

“A lack of transparency,” he said. “A lack of decisive action. A lack of accountability allows problems to fester and ultimately shakes the foundation of public trust in the county clerk’s office.”

“As for the County Clerk’s Office, I am pleased to report that since then there have been no additional cases other than those our office originally reported in 2022,” Romeo said.

The 2024 election for county clerk will be included in the November 5 ballot.
