1 dead after car crash in Knoxville nursing home

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – One person was killed when a minivan crashed into a Knoxville nursing home Monday afternoon.

At approximately 3:02 p.m., the Knoxville Fire Department responded to a report that a car had driven into the Accura HealthCare of Knoxville nursing home in the 600 block of North 7th Street.


According to Knoxville Police, when emergency responders arrived on scene they found a minivan that had crashed through the building and into a resident’s room. The resident was also trapped and had to be rescued. The resident’s condition is currently unknown.

One person was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Des Moines and another was taken to a hospital in Knoxville, where they died from their injuries, police said. Their names were not released.

The building was significantly damaged and had to be evacuated while temporary repairs were carried out.

No information has been released about what caused the crash.

Fire and police personnel were assisted by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Accura personnel, Knoxville Hospital, Knoxville Rural Fire Department, Indiana Township Fire Department, Pella EMS, Marion County Emergency Management, Iowa State Patrol and Knoxville Community School District.
