Man accused of sexually abusing a girl appears in court in High Point

HIGH POINT, NC (WGHP) — A man facing dozens of charges in the alleged sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl made his first court appearance Monday.

In the courtroom, the judge decided that 46-year-old John Marcus McCormick would be held without bail for the time being.

This came after the 40 sexual offense charges against McCormick were listed.

“Because these are all child sex offenses, you face a maximum sentence of 59 months in prison for each count. You are also charged with 20 B1 felonies, also known as child sex offenses. Each of these felonies carries a maximum sentence of life without parole,” said Guilford County District Court Judge Marc Tyrey.

Police arrested McCormick on Thursday after investigators said he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl.

In court, the prosecution stated that the sexual abuse allegedly went back two years.

According to the arrest warrants, the crimes occurred between February 2022 and May 2023.

To support its allegations, the public prosecutor relied on an interview conducted by the police.

McCormick is being held without bail at the Guilford County Jail in High Point and his next court date is October 18.
