Shasta County Sheriff tests ALERT FM system for emergency notifications

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) will test its ALERT FM system in Shasta County on Wednesday, July 17.

SCSO describes the ALERT FM system as a “device that receives mass notifications via FM radio signals during crisis or emergency situations. This system provides an additional level of emergency notification for those living in areas with no or limited internet and cellular reception, or in areas at risk of a power shutoff for public safety reasons.”

The test will take place on Wednesday. Owners of an ALERT FM device are expected to receive a test message around 10:00 a.m. If technical issues occur during the test period, SCSO recommends users contact ALERT FM at 866-869-5180.

SCSO says if you are in an area that meets the criteria so ALERT FM could be of benefit to you, you can purchase it on the ALERT FM website.

SCSO also encourages everyone to sign up for their public alert system, AlertShasta, which has replaced the previous alert system, CodeRED. You can sign up to receive emergency alerts on the Shasta County Public Alert System website.

SCSO says AlertShasta is a Genasys Protect product that shows you your evacuation zone. Visit Genasys Protect here.
