What we know after a 7-year-old boy was shot in the chest in Inkster’s apartment

INKSTER, Mich. – A 7-year-old boy was shot in the chest in an Inkster apartment on Monday, police said.

What happened

The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024, at the Dearborn View Apartments near the intersection of Beech Daly and Cherry Hill Road in Inkster.

Investigators believe the shooting was sparked by a gun that was fired carelessly inside the apartment. Officers are still trying to determine what exactly led to that moment.

“This is an extremely concerning incident, especially when it involves a young child,” said Police Chief Tamika Jenkins.

No further details about the nature of the shooting were released.

Little boy injured

When Inkster police arrived at the apartment, they found a seven-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers took him to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

His condition is reported to be critical but stable.

Person of interest

Police said they had identified a suspect who may have been in the apartment at the time of the shooting.
