Pittsburgh Steelers set to hold first joint practice

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are moving closer to the 2024 season. The NFL has released the schedule for joint practices that will take place during training camp. For the first time in eight years, the Steelers will return to the season.

Before their preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, the Steelers will host the Bills for a joint practice. The practice will be held at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe on August 15.

This is the first time in nearly a decade that the Steelers have held a joint practice. The team hosted the Detroit Lions in 2016. The sessions were intense and physical, featuring a top-notch Antonio Brown facing off against Darius Slay. Despite the intensity, no major skirmishes broke out. For the way these practices tend to go, it was pretty tame.

The Steelers have hosted the Bills for a joint workout before. ESPN’s Brooke Pryor reported that the Bills visited St. Vincent’s in 2014. That session was also relatively quiet, with no notable incidents.

The Steelers and Bills will now meet a few days before their second preseason game at Acrisure Stadium, and it will certainly be an exciting day of competition. Shoving matches are commonplace. It’s the middle of training camp, temperatures and tempers are high, and players are desperate to earn a roster spot.

When the Bills visit in August, it’s also likely to be a less heated affair. The league made some adjustments this offseason, with teams only holding joint practices for one day with one other team. That should limit the risk. Last year, the Jets and Buccaneers planned to have two days of joint practices, but canceled the second after a day of nonstop brawling in the middle of the session. Both the Steelers and Bills are hoping to bring a competitive spirit to their practices, hoping that something more will await their game a few days later.
