Kentucky State Police (KSP) told the Elizabethtown Post shortly after 8 p.m. ET that Trooper Cole Payne was on patrol when he spotted the crash, which occurred at the intersection of the U.S. Highway 31W Bypass and the westbound ramp to the Western Kentucky Parkway.

According to KSP, preliminary investigations indicate that off-duty Deputy Billy Edwards, 67, of Elizabethtown, Hardin County, was riding a 2023 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the bypass when a 2024 Buick Envista, driven by Cameron Harris, 20, attempted to make a sharp right turn onto the Western Kentucky Parkway exit ramp. He collided with the motorcycle, which then lost control and veered onto the shoulder of the ramp.

Edwards was thrown from the motorcycle along with his wife Kathy Edwards (58). Both suffered fatal injuries. The Hardin County Coroner’s Office declared them dead at the scene of the accident.

Harris and a passenger in the Buick reported no injuries, according to state police.

The affected section of the US 31W bypass was closed for about four hours so that police could reconstruct the accident.

According to a social media statement from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department, Edwards was with the Elizabethtown Police Department for 24 years and currently works as a school resource officer for the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office.
