Houston Astros executive reveals big thoughts on first-round pick

The Houston Astros were pleasantly surprised with the pick they ultimately made in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft. With the 28th overall pick, the Astros ended up selecting Sam Houston catcher Walker Janek.

Many believed Janek would be ranked higher throughout the draft, including Houston themselves.

As shared by Brian McTaggart of MLB.comThe Astros actually considered Janek the best player on their board for nine or ten picks before they were able to get him at No. 28.

McTaggart also suggested Janek could move up quickly within the organization.

Astros scouting director Cam Pendino spoke about Janek and couldn’t believe the Astros were able to sign the young catcher.

“We didn’t think he would be here, honestly. To see him get here, we were really excited.”

After his selection in Houston, Janek spoke about the selection process.

“I had no idea who was going to take me. I was kind of nervous on the couch and when it finally happened, it was a surreal moment. I really don’t think it’s sunk in yet. I’m still in awe. I’m super excited and ready to play.”

Additionally, the catcher’s family are huge Astros fans, which helped him fit in right away.

During the 2024 college baseball season for Sam Houston State, Janek ended up playing in 58 games. He hit .364/.476/.709 to go along with 17 home runs and 58 RBIs.

For Houston, the 21-year-old catcher offers great promise for the future. He could very well become the team’s long-term future behind the plate. There’s no doubt he has enormous potential.

Only time will tell if he can reach his full potential. The Astros will have to develop him well, but he is full of raw talent and also has a great work ethic.

This pick seems like a good move for Houston. He’s very MLB ready compared to most prospects and is ready for the challenge of making his way to the major leagues.
