Man sentenced to life in prison for raping a minor

Surat: An Ankleshwar court has awarded life imprisonment to a 32-year-old man for raping a 12-year-old girl in GIDC Ankleshwar area in 2022. The accused Rohit Thakur was also fined Rs 30,000 to be paid to the minor girl, along with Rs 1 lakh from the ‘victim compensation scheme’. After raping the girl thrice, Thakur tried to kill the girl by strangling her. On the day of the crime, Thakur lured the girl with chocolate while she was playing near her house. He told her to come to his house to peel garlic, for which she would get 10 rupees to buy a chocolate. After the girl went to his house, he raped her there. He turned up the volume on the television so that her screams couldn’t be heard. Before raping her, the defendant tied her legs so that the girl could not run out of the house. When someone knocked on the door, the defendant tried to kill her by strangling her. When the knocking continued, the defendant threatened the girl and told her to hide under the bed. Thakur’s sister-in-law came to know about the incident and told the girl’s mother about it. Soon she reached Thakur’s house and rescued her daughter. Ankleshwar GIDC police arrested Thakur and booked him under relevant sections.
