Latest news from Jay Slater: Teenager ‘may have had an accident’ as body found in Tenerife | UK news

About an hour ago, Spanish police confirmed to Sky News that human remains had been found during the search for Jay Slater.

The British teenager disappeared in Tenerife almost a month ago.

The 19-year-old had been at a music festival at the Papagayo nightclub in the southern resort of Playa de las Americas.

He was last heard from early on Monday, June 17, when he called a friend to say he was lost, had no water and his phone battery was only at 1%.

Police, firefighters and search and rescue teams have combed a huge area around the village of Masca and the surrounding areas.

Here is a timeline of his disappearance:

Sunday, 16 June – Mr Slater attends the NRG festival in the south of Tenerife with a group of friends. He then travels to the north-western mountain village of Masca with two people he met at the festival.

Monday, June 17 – approx. 8 a.m. – Ofelia Medina Hernandez, the last known person to speak to Mr. Slater, tells him when he asks that the bus is coming at 10 a.m. He sets off on foot and she says that she later passed him “quickly on foot.”

Monday – 8.15am – He calls his girlfriend Lucy Law and says he got lost trying to walk from Masca to his accommodation in Los Cristianos in the south.

Monday – 8.50 am – His last live location was the Park Rural de Teno – a mountain region popular with hikers.

Monday – 9.04 am – He is reported missing.

Tuesday, June 18 – His family flies to Tenerife to take part in the search.

Wednesday, June 19 – His mother, Debbie Duncan, issues a statement saying she fears her son has been “taken away against his will.”

Sunday, 23 June – A week after Mr Slater’s disappearance, search teams began concentrating their efforts on an area near where his phone had last beeped.

Monday, June 24 – A GoFundMe page set up to support the search reaches its target of £30,000.

Friday, June 28 – Police ask for volunteers to help and the next day a “large-scale search” begins for Mr Slater.

Sunday, June 30 – Two weeks after his disappearance, Spanish authorities called off the search but said the investigation was still ongoing.

His family and friends said they would stay on the island and continue searching for him.

Tuesday, July 2 – The Guardia Civil stated that there was no reason to believe that Mr Slater was the victim of a crime.

Saturday, July 6 – Police in Tenerife said Mr Slater’s family could deploy their own search and rescue teams.

His uncle Glen Duncan told Sky News they were becoming increasingly frustrated with the lack of communication from the police.

Monday, July 8 – In a further statement, Mr Slater’s mother said his family “cannot put into words the grief they are feeling”.

She also said they were aware of the “horrific comments and conspiracy theories circulating on social media about her son’s disappearance.”

Monday, July 15 – Spanish authorities find a body believed to be that of Mr Slater in the Masca area.
