Jacoby Jones’ family releases statement following Houston Texans legend’s death

Jacoby Jones, a former Houston Texans wide receiver and returner, died Sunday at his home in New Orleans. He was 40.

The cause of death has not been released. However, Jones’ family released a statement to the NFLPA expressing gratitude to the NFL community for showing love and fond memories of the former All-Pro.

“We would like to express our gratitude for all the kind thoughts and support you have shown us during this difficult time. Your continued support and respect for our privacy means the world to us.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Jacoby Jones, a former New Orleans Ravens football player and proud graduate of a historically black college, at the age of 40.” — Jones’ family via NFLPA

Jones began his career with the Texans, who selected him in the third round (73rd overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft out of Lane College. He played his first five years in Houston, catching 127 passes for 2,733 yards and 14 touchdowns. His most significant impact was as a return specialist.

In 2012, Jones signed with the Baltimore Ravens and played a pivotal role in the franchise’s championship run. During Super Bowl XLVII, Jones scored a touchdown on a 108-yard kick return, which remains a record for the longest return in Super Bowl history.

He also recorded a 56-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco. The Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31.

Jones finished his career with 203 receptions for 2,733 yards and 14 touchdowns in 128 games. As a returner, Jones recorded five kick returns and four punts.
